In a study of patients with ESRDstarting renal replacement therapy inAustralia and New Zealand, a teamled by David W. Johnson, MD, PhD,of Princess Alexandra Hospital inBrisbane, Australia, found that ESRDcaused by lupus nephritis was associatedwith a 33% increased risk of dialysispatient death and 87% increasedrisk of renal transplant patient deathversus ESRD due to other causes.
