Blacks with gout have significantly worse health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with whites, Jasvinder A. Singh, MD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and colleagues reported in Rheumatology (2017;56:103-112).

In a 9-month prospective cohort study of 167 patients with gout (107 whites and 60 blacks), researchers found that blacks were significantly younger than whites (61.1 vs. 67.3 years) and had significantly higher median baseline serum urate levels (9.0 vs. 7.9 mg/dL). Compared with whites, blacks had worse HRQoL scores on 3 SF-36 domains: the mental component summary and 2 of the 5 Gout Impact Scale components, the investigators reported.
