Higher heart rates may predispose individuals to the development of obesity and diabetes mellitus, according to a 20-year prospective Japanese study of 614 participants older than 20 years.
A baseline heart rate of 80 beats per minute or higher in 1979 predicted development of obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance in 1999, after adjusting for age, gender, and other confounders, researchers reported in the American Journal of Hypertension (2009;22:151-155).
