The American Kidney Fund has launched a new health education campaign called Beyond Bananas™, with support from AstraZeneca, to help patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) understand hyperkalemia and ways to control it.
The Beyond Bananas webpage, KidneyFund.org/beyondbananas, features educational content that explains high potassium and dietary and medication interventions to reduce it. The site offers a potassium tracker, a grocery shopping list of low potassium foods, and a food chart for download. It also links to low potassium recipes to assist in meal planning. In the coming months, the site will be releasing a series of videos.
“As many as 20% of people diagnosed with kidney disease also have hyperkalemia, but many are unaware of it, highlighting the significant need for greater awareness of this condition,” Tarek Rabah, vice president, Renal, US at AstraZeneca, stated in a news release. “We look forward to the role AKF will play in advancing this important initiative to help empower CKD patients to have more informed discussions with their health care providers in order to better understand and ultimately manage their hyperkalemia.”
