Intradialytic use of oral nutritionalsupplement (ONS) by hemodialysis(HD) patients may help decrease thenumber of missed dialysis sessions,researchers reported online in theJournal of Renal Nutrition.
Debbie Benner, MA, RD, of DaVita Inc, in Denver, and colleaguescompared 2 groups of in-center HDpatients with serum albumin levels of3.5 g/dL or less: 3374 patients whoparticipated in an ONS pilot programin which patients received intradialyticONS and a like number of matchedcontrols in facilities not participating inthe pilot program. The ONS group had33% fewer missed dialysis treatmentscompared with controls and a 69%decreased risk of death.
