Elevated serum levels of fibrinogenare associated with the developmentof diabetic end-stage renaldisease (ESRD) in patients with type 2diabetes mellitus, according to studyfindings published online in DiabetesResearch and Clinical Practice.

In a study of 174 patients with type2 diabetes mellitus and biopsy-provendiabetic nephropathy, Junlin Zhang,MD, PhD, and colleagues at WestChina Hospital of Sichuan University inChengdu, China, found that patients inthe second, third, and fourth quartilesof serum fibrinogen had a significant7.1-, 5.8-, and 8.8-fold increased riskof progressing to ESRD comparedwith those in the first quartile.
