Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, new findings confirm.

Based on a meta-analysis of data from 20 cohort studies, researchers found that, compared with lifetime alcohol abstainers, men who drank 22 grams of alcohol a day had a 13% decreased of developing type 2 diabetes.

Women who consumed 24 grams or less had a 40% decreased risk, according to a report in Diabetes Care (2009;32:2123-2132).
