A British pilot study found that high-dose thiamine therapy reduced urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in patients with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria, according to a report in Diabetologia (2008; published online ahead of print).

In the study, 40 such patients were randomized to receive 300 mg of thiamine or placebo per day for three months. UAE decreased significantly (by 17.7 mg/24 hr) in the thiamine group, but not in placebo recipients
