Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is moderately associated with CKD in vascular surgery patients, researchers have concluded based on a study of 3,358 vascular surgery patients.
COPD was present in 47% of patients with CKD—defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 as determined using the Modified Diet in Renal Disease study equation—and 38% and 32% of patients with an eGFR of 60-89 and 90 mL/min/1.73 m2 or higher, according to findings published in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (2009;24:2763-2767).
Patients with COPD were 22% more likely to have CKD. Moderate COPD was associated with a 33% increased risk. Additionally, among patients with CKD, moderate and severe COPD increased long-term mortality risk by 27% and 61%, respectively, compared with those without CKD.
