Low socioeconomic status (SES) increases blacks’ risk of developing CKD nearly twofold, but does not increase the risk in whites, according to a recent report in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (2010;55:977-980).

The finding is based on a study involved 2,375 black and white subjects (1,420 blacks, 955 whites), of whom 146 (6.2%) had CKD. Race was not associated with CKD overall, but blacks were more likely to have advanced CKD (estimated glomerular filtrate rate GFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m2).
