A 34-question knowledge survey administered to 401 adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) provided to be a reliable and valid instrument for identifying areas of and risk factors for poor renal knowledge among these patients, but it showed that 78% of respondents did not know that the disease may progress with no symptoms.

The survey, which was administered to patients at a nephrology clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, also revealed that 34% did not know they were at heightened risk for heart disease and 32% did not know that the kidneys make urine, according to a report in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (2011;57;387-395).
