Baseline serum uric acid levels aredirectly proportional to the rate ofdecline in renal function in patientswith IgA nephropathy (IgAN), researchersreported online ahead of print inInternational Urology and Nephrology.

In a study of 93 IgAN patients by AliBakan, MD, of Goztepe Training andResearch Hospital, Istanbul MedeniyetUniversity in Istanbul, Turkey, andcolleagues, baseline serum uric acidlevels significantly predicted the changein estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR) after adjusting for various potentialconfounders, including age, gender, blood pressure, baseline albumin concentrationsand use of ACE inhibitorsand angiotensin receptor blockers.
