Sepsis a Major Factor in AKI

Greek researchers who studied 170 ICU patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) found that the most common contributing factor to AKI was sepsis, which was present in 45% of cases, an epidemiologic study found.

The 170 patients represented 16% of total admissions in 23 ICUs in Greece. Half the patients required renal replacement therapy.

About 65% of the patients died and 15% were discharged with renal impairment, according to findings published in Blood Purification (2009;28:239-244).
