Treatment with n-3 polyunsaturated acids (PUFA) may help hemodialysis (HD) patients lower serum triglyceride levels, according to a report in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (2008; published online ahead of print).
Researchers in Denmark randomized 206 HD patients with CVD to receive either n-3 PUFA treatment (two capsules daily totaling 1.7 g of n-3 PUFA) or a control treatment (identical capsules containing olive oil).

After three months, they observed a significant decrease in serum triglycerides in the n-3 PUFA group (from 1.84 to 1.63 mmol/L) compared with the control arm (from 1.89 to 2.07 mmol/L). They observed no significant effect on other lipids or lipoproteins.
