GRAPEVINE, TEX.—More and more patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in the United States, according to researchers.
The annual rates of CABG among ESRD patients doubled from 2.5 to 5 per 1,000 patient-years from 1988 to 2003, according to Dipen S. Parikh, MD, and collaborators at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

While comorbidities increased among ESRD patients during this period, in-hospital mortality rates declined from 31% to about 5% and the mean length of hospital stay decreased from 25 to 13 days. Mortality rates, however, remain nearly threefold higher than among CABG patients without ESRD.
