Large renal tumors can be removed safely and effectively with laparoscopic nephrectomy (LN), a study shows.
Researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., reviewed 96 LN cases involving tumors ranging in size from 2.0 to 20.0 cm in diameter (median 8.0 cm). Increasing tumor size was associated with increased operative time and estimated blood loss, but not perioperative transfusions or complications. The investigators observed no significant increase in the number of conversions to open procedures in patients with larger tumors.
