Kibow Biotech, Inc., of Newtown Square, Pa., has launched Kibow Biotics, a scientifically formulated and clinically tested dietary supplement that helps maintain healthy kidney function.
Kibow Biotics contains a mixture of probiotic bacteria that can metabolize nitrogenous waste products in the bowel, thus complementing the excretory function of the kidneys, according to the manufacturer.
Kibow Biotics, which is not a drug, contains three naturally occurring strains of beneficial bacteria: Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium longum.

The product comes in the form of enteric-coated, gluten-free, vegetarian gel capsules that are taken orally after every meal (three times daily).
In studies, oral administration of these bacteria in nephrectomized rats and miniature pigs decreased both blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels. This product, under the brand name of Azodyl, for cats and dogs with moderate-to-severe kidney failure, has been licensed to and successfully marketed and sold by Vetoquinol S.A. in Canada and the United States since July 2006.
