The Redsense safety device, which is designed to detect venous needle displacement during hemodialysis (HD), has received FDA approval for home/self use during home HD, according to the device’s manufacturer, Redsense Medical.

The device has two parts: a sensor patch and an alarm unit. Redsense Medical, which has offices in Sweden and Chicago, explained that an infrared signal is transmitted from the alarm unit to the sensor patch using fiber optic cable.

In the event of bleeding, inner layers of the patch smear blood over the optical sensor, which triggers the alarm. The device does not react to perspiration or water.
