Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels before chemoradiotherapy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer is associated with a poor prognosis, according to researchers at Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan.
Their study looked at 88 patients. During a median follow-up of 33 months, 19 patients died from bladder cancer. The five-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rate was 73%. The 10 patients with high CRP levels (0.5 mg/dL or higher) before treatment had a CSS rate that was significantly worse than that of the other patients, the researchers reported in BJU International (2008; published online ahead of print).
