ORLANDO—Patients with high BP are at greater risk for declining renal function than those with normal BP, data suggest.
Claudine Jurkovitz, MD, MPH, of the Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Del., and her colleagues studied 4,253 patients. The median follow-up was 3.3 years. At baseline, 55.6% of subjects had normal BP (less than 140/90 mm Hg), 32.1% had mild hypertension (140-159/90-99 mm Hg), 10.3% had moderate hypertension (160-179/100-109 mm Hg), and 2.1% had severe hypertension (180/110 mm Hg or higher).

Compared with normal BP, mild, moderate, and severe hypertension was associated with a 20%, 40%, and twofold increased risk of a decline in glomerular filtration rate, the researchers found.
The findings, presented here at the National Kidney Foundation 2007 Spring Clinical Meetings, suggest that more aggressive BP treatment is warranted, especially in patients with severe baseline BP, the authors concluded.
