ORLANDO—Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) should be the preferred vascular access in elderly hemodialysis (HD) patients, researchers reported at the 2008 Annual Dialysis Conference.
In a study of 146 HD patients older than 70 years, investigators at the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Service in England found that 77 patients who had AVFs created for vascular access experienced fewer complications than the 137 patients using tunneled catheters.
