Albuminuria is associated with an increased likelihood of dementia in the elderly, researchers reported in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (2008;52:216-226).
The investigators studied 2,316 elderly participants in the Cardiovascular Health Cognition Study who underwent brain MRIs and testing for albuminuria. Of these individuals, 283 (12.2%) had dementia, 344 (14.9%) had mild cognitive impairment, and 1,689 (72.9%) had normal cognition.
Compared with subjects who had normal cognition, a doubling of albuminuria was associated with a significant 12% increase in odds of dementia after adjusting for potential confounders.
