Acupuncture may ease symptoms of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain (CP/CPPS), according to a report in The American Journal of Medicine (2008;121:79.e1-79.e7).

The study included 89 men with CP/CPPS randomly assigned to receive acupuncture or sham acupuncture twice weekly for 10 weeks. Of the 44 men in the acupuncture group, 32 (73%) responded compared with 21 (47%) of the 45 in the sham group.

Acupuncture recipients were 2.4 times as likely as sham acupuncture recipients to have long-term benefit.
