ACE inhibitor use delays development of renal involvement in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

In a study of 378 SLE patients, 80 (21%) were ACE inhibitor users and 298 (79%) were not. The likelihood of renal-involvement-free survival at 10 years was 88% for users vs. 75% for non-users, according to a report in Rheumatology (2008; published online ahead of print).

ACE inhibitor use also was associated with a decreased risk of disease activity.
