The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) announced that certified physicians who have a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirement due in 2020 will now have until the end of 2021 to complete it.
Additionally, physicians in their grace year will be afforded an additional grace year in 2021. The decision was taken so that physicians can focus their time and attention where it is needed, “caring for your patients and your community,” said ABIM CEO, Richard J. Baron, MD, in a statement.
At this time, all fall 2020 MOC assessments will still be offered, giving those who wish the option to take the exam this year; information will be sent later this spring about additional assessment dates and how to select one.

According to ABIM, requirements of the MOC program include completion of 1 approved activity at least every 2 years (in order to report as “participating in MOC”), earning at least 100 MOC points through approved activities every 5 years and taking and passing a knowledge assessment at least every 10 years (both are required to report as “certified”).
