Men with psoriasis are at increased risk of developing sexual dysfunction, researchers in Taiwan reported online in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
Yi-Ju Chen, MD, PhD, of the National Yang-Ming University in Taipei, and colleagues studied 12,300 men with newly diagnosed psoriasis and 61,500 matched controls without psoriasis from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Database.
Of the 73,800 subjects, 1,812 (2.46%) experienced sexual dysfunction during a seven-year follow-up period, including 373 (3.03%) of the psoriasis patients and 1,439 (2.34%) of the controls. Psoriasis patients had a 27% increased risk of sexual dysfunction compared with the control group, after adjusting for age, comorbidities, systemic treatment, monthly income, and number of heath care visits. Psoriasis patients older than 60 years and those with psoriatic arthritis had a 42% and 78% increased risk compared with controls. Sexual dysfunction risk was not significantly increased among psoriasis patients receiving systemic treatment.
