Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) levels, which have been shown previously to be elevated in adults with autosomal polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), are elevated early in the course of the disease, when kidney function is intact, investigators reported at Kidney Week 2011.

Abnormally high levels of FGF-23 are detectable in many children with ADPKD, the researchers concluded. Findings are based on a study of 35 children and young adults with ADPKD and normal estimated glomerular filtration rate, 33 adults with ADPKD and preserved kidney function, and nine adults with more advanced ADPKD.
