ORLANDO—Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) provides more relief for bladder outlet obstruction in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) compared with prostate artery embolization (PAE), according to a Brazilian study presented at the American Urological Association 2014 annual meeting.
Results suggest that PAE should be indicated for patients with a mild or moderate grade of obstruction only, the authors concluded.
The study, conducted by Eduardo Muracca Yoshinaga, MD, of the University of Sao Paolo, and colleagues, included 30 patients who were randomized to either PAE or TURP. The mean follow-up was 18 months.

All patients were older than 50 year and had a negative screening for prostate cancer (PCa) and confirmed bladder outlet obstruction.
Patients in both groups had a significant improvement in urinary flow, bladder outlet obstruction, International Prostate Symptom Score, and quality of life. There were no complications in either group. Patients treated with TURP had a higher post-operative urinary flow with a more pronounced improvement in outcomes.
