Intradialytic use of oral nutritional supplement (ONS) by hemodialysis(HD) patients may help decrease the number of missed dialysis sessions, researchers reported online in the Journal of Renal Nutrition.

Debbie Benner, MA, RD, of DaVita Inc, in Denver, and colleagues compared 2 groups of in-center HD patients with serum albumin levels of 3.5 g/dL or less: 3374 patients who participated in an ONS pilot program in which patients received intradialytic ONS and a like number of matched controls in facilities not participating in the pilot program. The ONS group had 33% fewer missed dialysis treatments compared with controls and a 69% decreased risk of death.
