Most patients who discontinue hemodialysis (HD) prior to death do so with the aid of palliative careteams, researchers reported at the 2018 Annual Dialysis Conference in Orlando, Florida.

In a study of 262 adult patients who discontinued HD, Joy C.Y. Chen, MD, and colleagues at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, found that 90 patients (34%) received palliative care consultation within 6 months of death and 172 (66%) did not. Of the patients who received palliative care, 61 (36%) had their initial consultations in the inpatient setting. On multivariable analysis, longer duration of HD and recent hospitalization prior to death were significantly associated with palliative care consultation within 6 months of death.
