Questionable Claims About Robotic Surgery

An analysis of websites from 400 randomly selected U.S. hospitals suggests that materials provided by hospitals regarding surgical robots overestimate the benefits, largely ignore risks, and are strongly influenced by the manufacturer.

Among the 41% of the evaluated hospitals that described robotic surgery, 73% used text or stock images provided by the manufacturer and 33% linked to a manufacturer's website, according to a Journal for Healthcare Quality report by Martin A. Makary, MD, MPH, and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Eighty-nine percent of the websites made statements of clinical superiority over more conventional surgeries, but none mentioned risks.
