Google Glass is slated to offer up a bevy of new opportunities for surgeons and other healthcare professionals.

Since going public in April of this year, the optical head mount has made a number of headways in the operating room, with many predicting that the technology will soon become a fixture in hospitals and medical facilities.

Several startups have launched since the inception of Glass that focus specifically on applications for healthcare professionals. Last year, an Ohio surgeon transmitted live footage from a surgical operation to colleagues and medical students across the city. Philips has created proof of concept simulations that demonstrate how Glass could make checking patient vital signs less cumbersome during delicate procedures.
