Is the U.S. Justice Department right in not challenging state laws legalizing marijuana?
The U.S. Justice Department announced recently that it will not challenge state laws that legalize marijuana.
Attorney General Eric Holder told governors of Colorado and Washington—states where voters approved legalization of recreational marijuana use—that the department will not seek to preempt those states' laws, even though marijuana will remain legal under the federal Controlled Substances Act.
Instead, the department will focus federal enforcement on such priorities as marijuana trafficking and distribution of marijuana to children.
