Is offering medical advice to a stranger via social media okay?

While social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter can facilitate communication between people and engender a sense of global community, physicians who use these outlets should be aware of potential ethical problems that could arise. 

For example, if physicians have an online professional persona (they make it known they are MDs), somebody who is not one of their patients may contact them electronically to ask them for medical advice.
