Have you seen swimming-related infections in PD patients?

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are routinely advised not to swim in a lake, a pool, or the sea. It is thought that this exposure will increase the risk of catheter infection.

This is especially felt to be the case with patients who are exposed to lake water.

Patients are sometimes advised to wear a protective plastic covering over the peritoneal catheter if they do decide to swim. While consensus guidelines have been published in this regard, there is not much information on how often these infections might occur. It is likely that some patients may not be following medical advice in this regard.
