A study presented at the European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association 51st congress found that poor dental health, but not periodontal disease, is an independent risk factor for death in patients with end-stage renal disease.

The study, which included 4,320 adults on long-term hemodialysis treatment, also showed that specific oral hygiene practices improved survival. The lead investigator, Giovanni Strippoli, MD, PhD, observed, “Dental disease is an important prognostic factor in dialysis patients.”
