Even the best-trained and most careful physicians can find themselves the defendant in a malpractice case. 

Regardless of the merits of a case, a lawsuit typically threatens a physician's professional image and sense of self-worth. The litigation process is distracting, time consuming, and emotionally draining. 

To protect themselves from a lawsuit, physicians often will engage in defensive medicine by ordering diagnostic tests that they know will be of little clinical value.
