Do free samples of a medication influence you to preferentially prescribe that drug?

It is common practice for pharmaceutical reps to provide doctors with free samples of brand name drugs.

One upside to this practice is that patients can begin treatment immediately rather than having to wait to get a prescription filled at a pharmacy.

Another is that free samples allow patients to find out which brand of medication and which dose works best before filling a prescription.

A downside, however, is the potential that free samples of a particular medication might prompt physicians to preferentially prescribe that drug over competing medications.
