Each year, millions of people take thousands of airline flights. It is inevitable that some passengers will become ill during a flight.

In a study published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine (2013;368:2075–2083), researchers reviewed records of in-flight medical emergency calls from 5 domestic and international airlines to a physician-directed medical communications center from January 1, 2008 through October 31, 2010.

Nearly 12,000 medical emergencies resulted in calls to the center. There was 1 medical emergency for each 604 flights. Physician passengers provided medical assistance in 48% of these emergencies.
