Study: LUTS in Men Linked To Diabetes
Irritative lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and nocturia are positively associated with diabetes, a study found. The relationship is greater in black than white men.
Researchers observed no association between diabetes and prostate volume, PSA level, and peak urinary flow rate.
“Taken together, our findings suggest that the presence of diabetes may be less related to prostate growth and more related to the dynamic components of lower urinary tract function,” the authors wrote in Diabetes Care (2008;31:476-482).
The study, led by Aruna V. Sarma, PhD, of the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, included 2,484 community-dwelling men, of whom 170 (6.8%) reported a history of diabetes.
