Regimens containing tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil increase renal transplant recipients' risk of noninfectious diarrhea by 37%, data suggest.

In a study of 41,442 renal transplant patients, the three-year cumulative incidence of diarrhea was 22%, with 18% diagnosed as noninfectious diarrhea with an unspecified cause, researchers reported in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (2008;51:478-486).

Female gender and type 1 diabetes increased the risk by 40% and 20%, respectively. Unspecified noninfectious diarrhea increased graft failure risk twofold.
