Peripheral Neuropathy Common in ED Patients

Peripheral neuropathy may be underappreciated as a cause of erectile dysfunction (ED), Spanish researchers reported in BJU International (2011;108:1855-1859).

In a study of 90 ED sufferers (mean age 54 years), investigators found that those with more severe symptoms of peripheral neuropathy have lower International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) scores and require more aggressive treatment than others.

The researchers confirmed neurologic pathology in 68.9% of patients, peripheral neuropathy in 61.1%, and myelopathy in 7.8%. Polyneuropathy was found in 37.8%.
