Lanthanum Not More Harmful

The phosphate binder lanthanum carbonate does not adversely affect cognitive function in hemodialysis patients compared with standard phosphate binders, according to a study published in Kidney International (2007;71:252-259).
 
The researchers say they conducted the two-year study “to allay fears about the potential for lanthanum to cause cognitive dysfunction in a similar manner to aluminum.” The study enrolled 360 patients.
