Diuretic Improves ESWL Outcomes

Adding a diuretic to extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) improves ureteral stone fragmentation and clearance, researchers reported in the Saudi Journal of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation (2008;19:397-400).

A team at Tabriz Medical Science University in Tabriz, Iran, randomized 87 patients with ureteral stones to receive either ESWL alone or ESWL plus 40 mg of the diuretic furosemide.

Fragmentation and clearance rates were 81% and 68% in the ESWL-alone group versus 93% and 88% in the combined treatment arm.
