Adding the alpha blocker doxazosin to standard treatment may help clear distal ureteral stones, according to researchers in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The study consists of 61 patients divided into two groups. Group 1 included 31 patients who received diclofenac (75 mg on demand). Group 2 included 30 patients who received doxazosin 4 mg daily in addition to the diclofenac treatment. The expulsion rate was significantly higher in group 2 than group 1 (93.3% vs. 60.9%), and group 2 had cleared stones more quickly (5.39 vs. 8.37 days).

The researchers reported their findings at the 22nd European Association of Urology Congress in Berlin.
