Caffeine is often maligned, but objective evaluation of the methyl xanthines and their effects often shows advantage to caffeine consumption.

Evaluation of male athletes revealed that compared with placebo-tested controls, those given caffeine during multiple days of exercise experienced superior performance, investigators reported online ahead of print in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise (2014;46:1787-1796).

The differences increased as testing continued despite higher pain and creatinine kinase in the caffeinated group.  Caffeine consumption may therefore offer an advantage physical performance over multiple days.
