End-stage renal disease (ESRD) due to lupus nephritis is linked to worse survival outcomes compared with other causes, investigators concluded in a paper published in Kidney International (2016;89:1337-1345).

In a study of patients with ESRD starting renal replacement therapy in Australia and New Zealand, a team led by David W. Johnson, MD, PhD, of Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, found that ESRD caused by lupus nephritis was associated with a 33% increased risk of dialysis patient death and 87% increased risk of renal transplant patient death versus ESRD due to other causes.
