Re-Hospitalization for AKI Common
SAN DIEGO—About 30% patients hospitalized for acute kidney injury (AKI) are readmitted for AKI within a year, researchers reported at Kidney Week 2012. African American race and AKI that requires dialysis increase recurrence.
Using a 5% random sample of Medicare beneficiaries, Areef Ishani, MD, of the U.S Renal Data System Coordinating Center and the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and colleagues identified 28,389 patients with an index AKI event in 2009. Of these 648 required dialysis during the initial AKI hospitalization. Data showed that 28% of all AKI patients and 33% of AKI-dialysis patients were hospitalized with a recurrent AKI episode within one year. African-American patients had a higher rate of recurrent AKI (34% of all, 49% of AKI-dialysis) compared with whites (27% of all, 30% of AKI-dialysis).
