Long-Term Risks of Hospital Readmission, Death in Patients with Kidney Disease
Long-term risks of hospital readmission and death for patients with chronic kidney disease or who are on dialysis or have received a kidney transplant were among the highest observed in a large, statewide population, according to study findings presented at Kidney Week 2011.
“Patients with the full-spectrum of kidney disease diagnoses should be a major focus of efforts to reduce hospital readmissions and death,” researchers concluded in a poster presentation.
The presence of CKD increased the risk for hospital readmission by a significant 35%, Kenn B. Daratha, PhD, of Washington State University in Spokane, and colleagues reported. Dialysis and renal transplant recipients had a significant 2.25 and 1.85 times increased risk, respectively.
