Nephrolithiasis is associated with coronary artery calcification (CAC) in adults without known coronary heart disease (CHD), researchers reported online ahead of print in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases

Seolhye Kim, MD, MSc, and colleagues at Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea, studied 62,091 asymptomatic adults without known CHD. Individuals who had nephrolithiasis had a higher prevalence of CAC than those who did not (19.1% vs 12.8%). In adjusted analyses, the CAC score ratio comparing individuals with and without nephrolithiasis was 1.31.
